Expanding Your Skills

Next Steps

As you continue to build kits, you'll naturally start to learn techniques that go beyond the basics of assembly. You'll also get better and better at those basics- things like sanding edges for a cleaner fit, painting parts for added detail, or even artificial weathering on models to make them look more aged and realistic. Many modelers move on from building out of the box kits as a standalone. Modifying or further customizing kits with your own colors, materials, or decorations is a good experience to have before moving on to your own projects. You could even start creating dioramas- small scenes that tell a story with models, backgrounds, and props. These kinds of things can be a challenge to make your creations more engaging. Since many of these projects hone the same skills, the more you build the better you will get. Before you know it, every new project could become more complex than the last.

If you want to keep growing your skills and connect with others, there's also a huge community online for different subsections of modeling. You can find countless video tutorials on YouTube, join hobby forums or other groups, or even just follow other builders to see their projects. Some sites offer online build instructions, ideas, or painting guides to help take yourself and your creations to the next level. Many people will be happy to answer questions or give you feedback. Even if you start out on your own, there are a large number of passionate people that can develop with you.

Thank you for visiting, remember that there's always something new to try- and always a new project waiting to be built!
